Warning: Do Not Feed After Midnight

haha remember Gremlins? This post doesn't really have anything to do with them besides the similarity of: Gremlins +Food + After midnight= monsters; Me + cooking + After midnight= Monster.

Okay not really a monster, but I get kind of cranky. But then again people always tell met that I get cranky when I cook. Which is weird, because I love cooking.

Okay, is it just me, or is there something really satisfying about making a huge mess cooking, and then cleaning everything up and having a sparkly kitchen plus yummy food?

The only downside is that I have a bad habit of cooking when everyone else has gone to sleep (basically often after 10, mostly past midnight) and so I have to be really careful about lids hitting the counter too hard, accidentally banging dishes together when I'm washing them etc. Please don't worry about the safety of my dishes, I don't hit them that hard.

My mom tells me I spend too much time cooking, and I'm kind of starting to believe that I have a problem with cooking/baking too much. Last night I firmly told myself that I wasn't going to cook again because I somehow always spend multiple plus hours in the kitchen but then decided at half past midnight that I couldn't resist and whipped up chicken pot pie (but with a bisquick topping instead of pie... so really a chicken pot bisquick) and bacon jalapeno cheddar biscuits.

Aaaand then I waited around for the pot pie to cool enough to put in the fridge. At 3:30 am. When I had woken at 5:30am that same day.

Goooood thing I don't technically have to do anything tomorrow until 6 pm.

PS. Is anyone doing NaNoWriMo this year? Even if you aren't a writer (because I am sooo not) it's really fun to try out, and it has made me appreciate other's writing even more.

It doesn't start till November so you have time to decide/ think about what you would want to write about!!

HP Numero Uno

I'm taking French semester. Level two. Even though I took four years in high school. And it's hard guys.

I have a hard enough time pronouncing english words and remembering them and how to spell. So adding a new language.... C'est très difficile.

Since I pretty much learned how to talk and the english language besides the constant language around me..... through reading, I thought maybe I was approaching French wrong.

I know it'll take a long time to trudge through- since I'll have to look up a lot of words and think a lot more than normal, but I bough Harry Potter And the Sorcerer's Stone in French!!

Made me very happy to get it in the mail.

Isn't the cover cute?!?

PS. Is the fact that I put the post title in spanish an indication of my French proficiency?

Apple Crisp

Okay guys, fall is so close I can almost feel it creepin' up on us.

And I seriously can't wait.

And to me cooler weather means apple crisp. Okay okay, I still make it during other times of the year, but it is technically a fall/winter dessert.

So to celebrate, I thought I would post my famous Apple Crisp recipe. It's the dessert I'm most proud of, which is odd because it contains no chocolate whatsoever, and has fruit in it.

wha?!? A dessert without chocolate, and with fruit? And I eat it?! Even crave it?! What sort of madness is this?!?

Yes people, it is that good. Okay but seriously don't build up expectations. I hate having expectations. But it is pretty good. IF you like apples, and sugar, and awesomeness.

I originally got it from some recipe on the internet, but adjusted it for my needs. So I claim it as my own now. (I can do that right? Nevermind, I don't want to know.)

I prefer it the next day, and cooled-but I know some crazy cats out there that warm it up with some vanilla ice cream. Plus, it is hard to wait till it's fully cooled.

I was originally going to post this without pictures, but I'm pretty obsessed with Pioneer Woman, so I decided to take a page out of her book. If you haven't tried any of her recipes, I highly recommend that you do. My jiggly bottom can attest to the tastiness.

Apple Crisp

-Approximately 6 apples (green or red)
-1 cup old-fashioned oats
-1 1/2 cups flour (whole wheat pastry if you are a health freak works perfectly. Or do half ww pastry and white. It's really a forgiving recipe.)
-2 cups brown sugar
-1 tsp baking powder
-1/2 tsp cinnamon (or just dump some in. I'm all about approximation)
-1/2-2/3 cup butter, melted
-Sweetened&shredded coconut
-Ground Flaxseeds (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Cut cleaned apples into small pieces ( I prefer pretty small, so it cooks better).

You can use peeled apples if that's the way you roll.

But I can't really be bothered then you have more fiber.

2. Dump apples and 1 cup of the brown sugar into a 9x13" baking pan. Stir around the goodness.

That is ONE of the cups of brown sugar people. This is an important step.

But, y'know, they are all important in my book.

I love when the juices start coming out and mix with the sugar(see the brown syrup on the bottom??). I won't judge if you eat a couple.

I know in my family these rarely make it unto the oven unharmed. But then again every time I bake I have to keep an eye on the people in the kitchen. It's a dangerous world out there people.

3.  Mix the rest of the ingredients together except for coconut and flax seeds.  Add coconut to your hearts content and mix in. I have never measured mine, but I guesstimate it to be about 1 1/2 cups.  If you want you can add a couple tbsp of ground flax seeds. You can't really taste them, but they add nutrition.

{Look I even added all the ingredients so that you can see them. My bowl doesn't look that normally. And then I couldn't get the camera to flash! My mom's camera is just too fancy for me.....}

You can put a couple tbsp's of flax if you are feeling extra health conscious. The nuttyness blends in really well, and works great with the texture.

I use it if it's on hand to make myself feel more justified in eating it for breakfast.

Make sure it isn't too dry!

That bowl may or may not be on the ground.... I needed direct sunlight! I have no regrets.

....

Or not. Still- No regrets.

4.

Spread mixture over the apples and bake for about an hour. The juices should be bubbling around the sides. If you cut your apples bigger, you will need to cook for longer. And I recommend covering the crisp loosely with foil if you plan on baking for longer so that your crisp does not become a burnt. (haha!)

Aaaand it's baked! Sorry no inside shot. I was entertaining and didn't want to whip out the camera and put the food on the floor searching for light, etc etc.

Plus there was like an inch left at the end of the night.

PS. If you are worried that you don't like coconut or something, or think that I am just a crazy person, the coconut flavor isn't that overwhelming and provides a great chewniess to the crisp. I highly reccomend keeping it in. But if you don't let me know how it is! I've never been that crazy.

Condensed instructions: (I'm nothing, if not thorough)

Out of Print

As lover of books, as I'm sure many of you are, I hope you appreciate these T-shirts.

If I was a t-shirt girl, I'd be all over this. And even as not a t-shirt girl, I may be requesting one for my birthday.

I discovered this wonderful site while reading Pancakes and French Fries post about it.

Here for the shop.

What one would you get? I think I'd snag a Slaughterhouse-Five personally.

Shakespeare Film Festival 2010

So instead of being up in Provo all day tomorrow, I will be here.

(Cedar City..... gahhhh 4 hour bus ride!!!!)

For this.

Seeing Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth

I mean, I'm personally not a huuuuge fan of reading Shakespeare, but boy I do enjoy seeing people act it out. I mean, that is how it was meant to be experienced right?

Any of you going??

PS. I made some new pages up at the top if you want to go check them out. I mean, they aren't really anything new. But organized newly.

I've got a bug

... a travel bug!!

I haven't been anywhere in a couple of years tear :(  but thanks to my parents taking me on many a trip, I looove traveling. I mean who doesn't? Well I suppose some people like to vacation doing the same thing every year, which is fun, but there are so many things to see!!

I've been drooling over some of our pictures from the last family trip we took (minus my sister, so I guess it was a parents + michelle trip) in Portugal and Morocco.

[Lisbon I believe, pretty close to our hotel]

{Lisbon isn't even my favorite city ever, however awesome it is, but *somehow* I think I could stand to live there for a few years... at least. No?}

I loveeee exploring places that are more ruins than preserved!

{This is where I died. It's up a huuuge mountain and has amazingggg views. Seriously.}

{Of course Morocco was AMAZING too. Highly recommended}

{Good-bye Morocco!}

(We may or may not have gotten into trouble with the guards by taking these pictures before getting on the ferry*.)

Does anyone else feel like they never fully appreciate all that they see when they are actually on vacation??

*That ferry ride was kinda hell-ish. I didn't mind tooo much, but the boat was totally rocking. Like you couldn't walk across the ship without bracing yourself. Limited seating. Multiple hours. Many, many, many Moroccans stuffed into the boat, and VERY intent on getting off first. Almost got trampled. It was intense.

(You can tell I'm in summer school by the amount of naps I take)

"For he is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him.
For he that diligently seeketh shall find"

1 Nephi 10:18-19

Really enjoying my Book of Mormon classes so far. It's like English, but we are studying scriptures!

PS. Had to bring in one poem we loved and one we hated for my Fundamental Literary Interpretations class and I brought in this gem by Mandy. I may have to frame all her poems and put them on my wall someday. Love them. (Hers was the one I loved... duhh. Oh and if you read this Mandy, my teacher said to tell you good job!)

Lost

Okay okay I know everyone and their mom is tweeting about these and probably blogging, but with only minutes before the recap, and mere hourse before the SERIES finale, I would just like to say good bye to Lost.

You have been good to me, and I don't think you will disappoint me now.

Will update after to gush about its awesomeness, because I have no theories or expectations, so it's all up from here baby!

PS. Since I'm such a geek I may or may not listen to the Podcast "The Lost Podcast with Jay and Jack". If you like this show, I recommend listening to them. Gets out all those urges to talk your friends ears off about the show.

UPDATE: okay, I know lots of people loved the ending, but I don't know, it just didn't blow my mind or anything. I think I just wanted one twist or something unexpected. I mean that's why I loved Lost because I never can predict things, and so their twists literally blew my mind.

And I anticpated pretty much everything this episode. I guess it was nice having a good ending, though I'm not even sure I understood it??

Call me a Debbie Downer, but I guess I just appreciate a more bittersweet-meaningful ending like in Gone With the Wind or something, than one that ends perfectly. To me the finale just didn't mesh up with the rest of the show.

Jimmy Kimmel Live afterwards was good though? Does that make me sound more enthusiastic??

I just love missionaries. And awesome cakes.

They are the absolute best.

One of the elders currently at my ward is especially hilarious. (I sure hope he keeps in touch when he leaves)

Do you recognize this guy? He is from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. If you have yet to see it I highly recommend it.

He and Elder P are basically the same.

Now whenever I am with Elder P I just think of him shouting "GUMMY BEARS!" or "STEEEEEVE!"
We even named our awesome cake from a Relief Society cake decorating activity after him.
Meet Steven Christopher. (The Steven part is in honor of Steve the monkey from above)

The resemblance is uncanny.

I'd like to take full credit for the awesomeness of the above picture, but alas, I cannot. Though I was a part in it's creation. I told my friend when she came up with the idea that my high school class mascot was Cookie Monster. She laughed and later tonight she was talking to my other friend that I went to high school with when she turned to me and said that she thought I was kidding! She then said I was no longer allowed to joke around with her because she doesn't know when I am kidding or not. She was the friend that also thought I was joking when I told her I was moving... until I was moved in.

PS. Doesn't our cake look amazing?? I am quite proud. Good job team! There must be some sort of magical link or something between me and awesome baked goods.

PS.PS. So I loved Alice in Wonderland. Well, maybe love is a bit of a stretch but I did enjoy it and would watch it again. YOU WON ME OVER TIM BURTON!! (But I still won't watch your other movies.)

Christmas may be over...

but I am still wearing my {handmade} christmas sweater! Well handmade in that I decorated it, not that I knitted it or anything.

My friend and I made not matching ones, but connecting theme ones, which makes it all the more awesome.

Keep in mind that those deer and the Merry Christmas are hand stitched on there. We are quite the homemakers.

Here they are together.

Notice how it goes from city to forest?? Oh, and don't mind my awkwardness.

Newest Obesession: Tarot Cards

So my friend is basically the best person in the world. Not *just* because she is awesome, but because she got me this for Christmas!

Seriously, I have been spending too much time with it. Me and my sister *may* be a bit obsessed. What can I say? I have been wanting a Tarot card set for a long time. It is scarily accurate about things. seriously, it knows me better than I know myself. We *could* be making it fit into what we want, but I think it's a little more than that.

And because of Christmas fatty-ness, I have one of these eyeing me from my desk and I thought I would share my love. I like to eat it so the chocolate all melts, and then I can chew on the toffee bits.

PS. If you follow me on Twitter, then you got to see my hair the other day. It's how Naomi from the Rockstar Diaries wears it a lot so I thought I would try it! It's a bit more daring than I normally am with my hair and it  is slightly more work than my normal brush-through. Here it is again, in case you were dying to see it. Which I know you all are.

Happy holidaysssss

Lovely all around

Tonight as I was getting ready for bed, I looked down at my oversized sweatshirt and sweatpants. Warm? Sure. Cute? Not so much. I wouldn't even answer the door to a solicitor in these things. They aren't ratty or anything, but to me sweats just say to people you see that "Hi, I don't care what you think of me."

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind when other people where sweats or anything. I get the days when jeans are just not looking that good. It's just for me I can't wear them in public.

So I was thinking about a little something I have been wanting for a few years now, but I can never find one up to my expectations.

Remember the nightgown Eliza wore while singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" in My Fair Lady?

I want it. Real bad.

Any tips on where to find one similar? It doesn't have to be exactly the same, but whenever I see that similar style I go weak in the knees. I just find them oh-so romantic, don't you agree?

PS. Isn't she just darling in this movie?? It's my favorite of hers.

New York, New York

rockstar diaries
In the normal style, instead of studying for my finals I have been reading The Rockstar Diaries archives (last semester it was being obsessed with all classic Disney movies). All. of. Them.

I know most of you probably follow the amazingness that is Naomi Davis, but being inundated with this sort of awesomeness is starting to make an impression on me. I have now decided that:

1. I need to go visit New York again. (eighth grade was too long ago)

2. At some point in my life a need holgaroid. Preferably sooner rather than later.

3. My future home must have some walls with blackboard paint so we can draw and have fun over and over again. Plus it's super cute.

Make Custom Color Chalkboard Paint

Martha Stewart had a pretty good idea for using the blackboard paint in other ways and custom colors. I love the aqua blue example and the calendar!

Now if you excuse me, I think some Frank Sinatra is calling my name...

PS. Did I mention how nice Naomi is? Who knew Rockstars would be so friendly and sweet?? Wait, on second thought, I'm pretty sure that's apparent from her blog. Love you Naomi!

Christmas List

So for the past few years in my family, my parents have us kids shop for ourselves because we are "picky" so I was thinking of asking my Mom to get me this dress.

384_8_

What do you think? In real life will the pattern make your eyes go bezerk?

Oh no! I just went to order it, and it's off the website! Email me back, email me back.

And in a perfect world, I would also get this....

Anthropologie, you can be so cruel sometimes, $138?! I wish it was in the "justifiable" price range.

Cimorelli

The three eldest sisters of this awesome band are in my BioPsych class. They are seriously some of the sweestest and nicest people I've met. I just wanted to wish them luck as they head to LA tomorrow to meet with their manager and write songs!

I think they are way more awesome than the Jonas Brothers.
(To be fair, I have never heard a Jonas Brothers song. Kinda proud of that actually.)

Rainbowy Goodness Part 2

After blogging about rainbow cakes, I couldn't get the idea out of my head. That plus procrastination equals: Rainbow Cupcakes!!!

These things are quite fantastically good.

You can pretty much *taste* the rainbow. And it's kind of awesome.

Nothing like breaking fast after church with a cupcake.

The End.

EDIT: If you want to try this out (please post pictures if you do!) you can go back to my other post and click the link under the photo for more exact directions, but basically you just make the cake batter, separate it evenly and add food dye. For cupcakes you just have to try and pour it in evenly in layers, but for cakes you bake each color separately.

PS. I got some red lipstick. Good or bad move?

Wait, what?!

So I was just wondering if any of you guys had ever hear the euphemism* Roses and Peaches**, cause I totally named my blog after it. And thinking about it now, I'm pretty sure I made it up.

            Roses   +     Peaches

= Awesomeness

I suppose my first clue ought to have been the fact that when I googled roses and peaches for a header picture, nothing came up. I just figured they didn't photograph well together.

* It has come to my attention that euphemism may in fact not be the correct word. Perhaps phrase or saying? It's getting all kinds of crazy up in here.

**basically that life is all roses and peaches--- all fine and dandy.

No?? Ok, well now you know I got the title. Let's make it a euphemism(?), alright?? It'll be AWESOME.

It's like I'm Marie Antoinette or something

Okay, okay. I'm not under any delusions or anything, but I *love* my new shoes. I have worn them everyday since I got them.

The bows and thicker heel remind me of Marie Antoinette. It may have nothing to do with fashion at the time, but that's just how my mind works.

And I think I can walk alright in them, which makes me pretty darn proud. They actually haven't hurt me too bad, except today when I had to stand for an hour in my lab, and then walk out to my car. My feet were crying.

PS. Sorry 'bout the bad quality. Was too lazy to get my actual camera out and used my iphone. But I did go through the trouble of getting this mirror out and putting my lamp on the floor (Daylights saving leaves such little natural light!).

PS.PS. I'm diggin' my new brooch from Dear Golden on Etsy.  Thought it was pretty snazzy, not sure my sister felt the same.

PS.PS.PS. Bonus shot of my JG poster.

Hope everyone's week is going smashingly!
